Spotlight on: Monster Truck

Monster Truck is my new band of the moment.

One of the things I love about going to concerts is the occasional discovery of a new artist among the opening acts. I recently had the chance to see Slash in concert in Montreal (one of the best concerts I’ve ever seen), and Canadian band Monster Truck was opening. While too often opening acts are a gauntlet you need to survive to get to the main act, these guys held their own with their energetic semi-retro rock and made me a fan.

According to their website, the band, from Hamilton, Ontario, started as a side-project with no serious goal, but quickly snowballed into something more serious. Their music, while not ground breaking or innovative, is a great mix of many familiar elements that together make up a quirky and fun recipe. Part The Trews and part The Sheepdogs (two other great canadian bands), with an extra dose of heaviness, some 70’s psychedelia and a dash of punk, their music is familiar and unique at the same time. It’s classic rock with a modern twist.

These guys were really energetic and seemed to be having a blast, which is always great. This sense of having a good time is also present in their music, and I can’t help but bang my head and smile while listening to their tunes.

But don’t take my word for it: head out to their website http://ilovemonstertruck.com and check them out. They’re even GIVING AWAY their 2 EPs! Now isn’t that worth trying? And if you do like them, I’d suggest giving them a hand by actually buying the music from iTunes or other digital retailers.

Cheers!
