The Hu: Mongolian Throat Singing Metal at its finest

The Hu Band

Alright, I’ll admit it’s a very narrow genre. And it doesn’t have some of the instrumentation we associate with heavy metal, like distorted guitars and banging drums. But the attitude and the musical approach is 100% forged in the finest metal tradition.

Using traditional Mongolian instruments, The Hu bends the rock and metal musical vocabulary to forge catchy head banging tracks that aren’t metal per se, but sure sound like it. They sing in their native tongue, adding a layer of ominousness to a western audience unable to understand the lyrics. I don’t know what they’re singing about, but it sounds deadly serious.

As far as I can tell, they only have two songs out, but are working on a new album that should come out later this year. The Hu is definitely a band to watch out for, showing it’s still possible to innovate in the metal genre. Check it out!
