The Music Addict’s VerdictFox Violet’s music sits comfortably at the crossroad between pop, rock and alternative. I dig it a lot.

How was the project started?

Fox Violet: I have been writing and recording for ten years, this project has evolved many times over! It was formed by myself and I’m excited for the next iteration.

What’s your songwriting process like?

Recently I have been journal writing a lot, trying to pull on all my current and past experiences to form what I feel is a solid reflection of the way I feel. I am jumping into the recording process earlier and working in a somewhat back to front manner. I feel like the way I work is through layering, and allowing songs to really breathe for a long time before they are finished. Songs are like poems and they really could be re-edited forever. Sometimes it’s hard to know when to stop. I’m trying to just take my time and have no real agenda this time around and it’s refreshing.

What are your influences?

Life itself! I think that I’m a bit of a sponge and I feel that I draw on my experiences to truly carve out stories in my songs. Whilst I feel that I am influenced by some incredible artists like PJ Harvey, I feel that really this music is a reflection of how I recall memories. I m also influenced by a need to retain subtext, I want for people to truly look between and under the words to find a meaning for them.

How would you describe your music?

Ambient indie rock with a slice of grunge. The project s very guitar driven and I love the feel of grit mixed with dreamy tones that create a dissonance.

What’s the one thing that makes you/your band stand out from the rest?

I really like to stay down to earth about the music, I hope that people find something in it that is cathartic, that they find a way that allows them to let all their angst out. I believe in trying to push myself sonically and think the music is more experimental than mainstream artists but it still retains a melodic center.

what’s your latest release, and what can you tell us about it?

‘I’ll take your pain’ was one of my latest singles. I wrote this song right before the pandemic, but it’s about feeling like you can’t breathe without someone, and on a larger scale the scary world that seems to dominate us. As much as it is a song about being afraid it is also about helping others and saying that you are there for each other and you will help each other through anything.

Have you ever played in Montreal?

I have not but I used to live there and I love Montreal! I especially love the band Half Moon Run and it’s a beautiful city to learn about new music.

What are your plans for the next few months?

Sadly no touring right now due to Covid-19, but I really want to in the future!
