The Music Addict’s VerdictFans of technical death metal need to check out Aspherium

How was the band formed?

Our bass player and I (Marius, guitar/vocals) wanted to start a new band when our old band wasn’t going anywhere. We quickly found a drummer in Bjørn Tore, and recorded a three song demo. It took a couple years to find the final piece of the puzzle, which was Morten on guitar.

What’s your songwriting process like?

It usually starts with a riff, and then building upon that foundation. We have a huge library of riffs and ideas we’ve written over the years, and it keeps growing. I usually put together a basic song structure, then Bjørn Tore programs drums. We jam the song together, and the other guys will learn it eventually…

What are your influences?

Bands like Machine Head, Metallica, Pantera, Devin Townsend, Opeth, Pink Floyd, Between the Buried and Me, Nile, Meshuggah and Emperor.

How would you describe your music?

We’re a mix of melodic death metal with prog metal and a huge dash of a whole bunch of stuff. We usually write pretty long songs that take the listener on a journey through the concept of a particular album.

What’s the one thing that makes you/your band stand out from the rest?

Our attention to detail in our songwriting. You will discover new stuff if you keep listening and pay attention.

What’s your latest release?

Our third album The Embers of Eternity came out last fall, and can be found everywhere you listen to music. And you can get it on CD and vinyl from our web store.

What are your touring plans for the next few months?

Our drummer is going through some hand surgeries right now. When he is all healed up, we will be touring across Norway. No firm plans for outside of Norway right now, but we would love to play everywhere we can.
