Album review: Shania Twain – “Still the One: Live from Vegas”

[star rating=”5″ Max=”10″]

Shania Twain is back it seems: she just announced her first world tour in over 10 years, and is capping her 2 year Las Vegas residency with this live album and accompanying DVD. The 19 track album (the DVD has 25) covers all her hits and a few singles that went nowhere. I like Shania and I loved her last tour in 2004 (wow, time flies!), but this has got to be one of the most unnecessary releases ever. Let’s face it, if you’re interested in her, you’ve got the albums already. You don’t really need another set of her hits played just like the record, with Shania sounding completely bored and lifeless.

On “Whose Bed have Your Boots Been Under”, she briefly quotes Nancy Sinatra’s “These Boots Are Made For Walkin'” (Are you ready boots? Start walking!), and it would have been a nice addition to actually play a snippet of it in the middle of the song, but she doesn’t go any further. The acoustic 4 song set fares a little better; it’s not terribly adventurous but at least it offers a fresh look at these tracks. It’s probably more fun to watch the DVD, but this album is a bore.

One of the things I always liked about her music was her perkiness, but none of it is present here; she’s just going through the motions. Not a good omen for her upcoming tour, which is probably the “Retirement Fund” tour. At least her voice is still strong

I’m giving it 5 stars only for the strength of the songs. Look for her Greatest Hits album for your Shania fix, especially if you’re new to her. I had to play it after this to remind myself of how much fun she used to be.
